London's Christmas Lights with Kids: Ages, Seats and Stamina
The short answer: Yes, most ways of seeing the lights take children, but the rules differ. The mulled-wine markets walk is adults only, the open bike ride starts at 10, and the silent-disco walk at 6. London taxis carry no booster seats. The good news: in December it is dark before half past four, so small children can see the lights and be home for bed.
Seeing Christmas lights in London with children comes down to a handful of questions. Can they come? How long can they last? And will they be warm and comfortable while they do? The answers differ a lot from one tour to the next, so check before you book.

The walks are the most open. The silent-disco lights walk takes children from 6, with a lower fare up to 17. The walk from Covent Garden books babies, children and teenagers, though it takes bookings of two or more. The lights and bites walk has a child fare from 2 to 11, but it is not suitable for coeliacs.
Two are not for families. The markets walk serves mulled wine and is for adults 18 and over. The open bike ride needs riders to be 10 or older; younger children can only ride on a private booking.
Laps, seats and boosters
On the open-top night bus, children under 5 travel free but do not get a seat; they ride on a lap. If you want a seat for your baby, buy a child fare. Children from 5 to 15 pay the child fare. On the vintage double-decker, infants also sit on laps.
Black cabs are different. There are no booster seats in London taxis, which the black cab from your hotel states plainly. ⚠️ Important: There is no toilet on the open-top night bus and it makes no stops for 60 to 90 minutes. Take everyone before you board; the stop, and cafés near each start, are on the meeting-point map.
How long small legs last
The walks run from 1 hour 30 minutes to 3 hours. For children under 8, the shorter ones are kinder: the silent-disco walk is 1 hour 45 minutes, and the music keeps them going. One traveller took nephews aged seven and nine, who loved it. On the Christmas Carol walk, one parent brought four children aged 7 to 17.
A bus or a cab takes the walking out of it. The bus is 60 to 90 minutes, sitting down. A black cab is 2 and a half to 4 hours, but you can stop, get out, and get back in. One family on the four-hour cab said a six-year-old stayed entertained throughout. Pushchairs are listed as fine on most walks and several cabs, but the pavements are crowded on December weekends.
The early dark is on your side
In mid-December the sun sets at 3:52pm and it is dark enough for the lights by about 4:32pm. That is the one thing that makes December easy with children. You can walk under the lights at half past four, eat by six and be back at the hotel for bedtime.
Book an early departure, and a weekday if you can, when the pavements are calmer. The week-by-week times are on the best time to see the lights.
💡 Useful Tip: Children feel the cold before adults do, and a bus top deck or a slow walk is colder than it looks. Pack hats, gloves and a spare layer, and a snack for the moment the excitement wears off.
Food, drinks and warming up
A hungry child is a cold child. Most lights tours include no food, so eat before you go or book one that feeds you. The bites bus serves tea, coffee or hot chocolate and festive snacks on board, for $59.65 per person. The lights and bites walk includes snacks, a light meal and Christmas cake, and ends at the riverside Christmas market. It is not suitable for anyone with coeliac disease or a gluten intolerance.
The silent-disco walk, the buses and the black cabs include no food. A private cab can stop where you like, so a warm drink on the way is easy to arrange with your driver. Check any allergy with the operator before you book.
Which tour suits which family
- Toddlers and babies: a black cab that lists infant seats, or a short walk with a buggy.
- Ages 5 to 9: the silent-disco walk, or the bus with everyone sitting downstairs if it is cold.
- Ages 10 and up: the bike ride, or a longer walk with stories.
- Teenagers: a private cab or walk shaped round them; one family said teenage daughters enjoyed theirs.
- Mixed ages and grandparents: a black cab, with one fare for up to six, from $89.67 each if six share the cab from your hotel.
What to add to the evening
Hyde Park Winter Wonderland runs from 19 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with rides, shows and food.
