A light trail is a different evening from the street lights: a ticketed walk through a garden lit for the season. If you are planning around the West End Christmas lights, here are the trails running this winter, with their dates, times, gates and prices.
Two trails have published their 2026 dates: Christmas at Kew and the trail at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. We add a palace that opens late and the free light art by the river, whose 2026 edition is not announced yet.
Street lights vs light trails
The street displays hang over public streets and cost nothing. A trail is fenced, timed and ticketed, with lit installations, music and food stalls along a set route. You need a different night for each.

Christmas at Kew, 13 November to 3 January
Christmas at Kew lights the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, in Richmond, west of the centre. It runs on selected dates from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, from 4.20pm to 10pm. On 24 December it closes at 9pm.
Price: tickets from £25.50, with member, family and child prices
Admission: a separate ticket from daytime entry to Kew Gardens
Anytime tickets: a limited number give trail access from 4.20pm to 7.40pm
Adults only: new for 2026, the evenings of 3 and 9 December are for over-18s
Quiet Access: 21 November and 1, 16 and 26 December, for visitors with hidden disabilities

Kew asks visitors to come by public transport. Parking is limited and has to be booked with your ticket. Bikes and scooters are left at the gates.
Chelsea's trail at the Royal Hospital, 25 November to 28 December
The Chelsea Winter Village and Illuminations trail runs through Ranelagh Gardens, in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, from Wednesday 25 November to Monday 28 December 2026. It is closed on Christmas Day. Its organisers call it the only festive light trail in central London.
Times: gates open daily from 4:30pm to 8pm or 8:30pm; the trail closes at 10pm
Length: about 1.5 km, 45 to 75 minutes at a relaxed pace
Price: adults £18 to £29.95, children £12 to £19.95; under-3s free but need a ticket
Changes: tickets are non-refundable; you can move your date for free up to two weeks before
The village: free to enter, with food, a market and fire pits
It is the easiest trail to pair with a lights tour. Chelsea is a short ride from Victoria, where the vintage double-decker boards.
Hampton Court's Winter Palace, late on selected dates
Hampton Court Palace is not a trail but an indoor Christmas show. From 28 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, much of the palace becomes the Winter Palace, with installations, puppets and live performance in its rooms. It is included in palace admission.
On 9 to 11, 16 to 17 and 19 to 30 December the palace stays open until 7:30pm, with the last timeslot at 5:30pm. So on those dates you arrive in the dark. The palace is well out of the centre, upriver, so give it a whole afternoon.
Free light art by the river
The Southbank Centre's Winter Light puts free light installations along the riverside walk. The 2025-26 edition ran from 1 November 2025 to 18 January 2026, switched on daily from 4pm to 11pm. The 2026 edition has not been announced.
If it returns, it is the one trail you can walk into without a ticket. It sits beside the riverside market, and the lights and bites walk ends there.
Booking a timed slot
Every paid trail sells timed entry, so book once you know your dates. If you are flexible, a weekday gives you more slots to choose from than a Saturday in December.
Check three things before you pay: the gate your ticket names, the last entry time and whether you can change the date. Kew's last entry runs from 7pm to 8pm by gate, and Chelsea lets you move a booking up to two weeks ahead.
Getting there after dark
Kew asks you to come by public transport wherever you can. Parking is limited and has to be booked with your ticket, and bikes, scooters and skates are left at the gates. Check which gate your ticket names, since the last entry differs by up to an hour.
Chelsea's trail is the central one: you enter at London Gate on Royal Hospital Road, SW3 4SR. Hampton Court is well upriver, so on a late-opening date give yourself a whole afternoon and plan the journey back before you go.
Children, access and adult evenings
All three are built for families, with food stalls and seasonal extras. At Chelsea, under-3s go free but still need a ticket, and registered assistance dogs are allowed. At Kew, Quiet Access sessions on 21 November and 1, 16 and 26 December are for visitors with hidden disabilities, such as autism.
If you would rather go without children, Kew's evenings of 3 and 9 December are for over-18s only, new for 2026. On the street lights, the markets walk with mulled wine is also for adults 18 and over.
Pairing a trail with a tour
A trail takes most of an evening, so keep it for its own night. A good pattern for a short trip is a street lights tour one night, when the West End is the point, and a trail the next, when you want a slower walk.
Start with the lights, since they need no booking and are on every night from early November.
