Your cab, your party, your pace

Pickup from your hotel

The cab comes to your London hotel, so the evening starts at your door. You choose the start time when you book; the listing prints no fixed departure. The fare buys the whole cab for up to six people, and nobody else joins you. The tour is in English.

A black cab fits the side streets, so your driver can pull in where a bus cannot. The cab is listed as wheelchair accessible, and the surfaces at the stops are too. If someone in your party uses a wheelchair, this is the easiest way to see the lights.

One fare for up to six

The price is $538.02 for the cab, not per person. Two of you pay the same as six. Split six ways, it is $89.67 each. That makes a black cab good value for a family or a group of friends, and dear for a couple. A bus seat costs $40.45.

Gratuities are not included, nor are food and drinks. If your driver makes the evening, a tip is up to you. Other private cabs run from $372.16 to $620.27, for two and a half to four hours, and they sit side by side on private London Christmas lights tours.

What the driver-guide does

Your driver is also your guide. You hear the history of the lights and of the streets they hang in, and you can ask anything. Travellers say the best drivers plan the stops so you can step out for a photo under a display, then climb back into the warm.

For one party the timing worked out to catch an hourly advent display, and every request on the night was handled. Tell your driver what you most want to see when you set off. If you have a list, the evening can be built round it. The streets and their displays are described on the lights street by street, so you can pick before you go.

The streets a cab can and cannot drive this year

The cab's own description takes you through Mayfair, Chelsea, Belgravia and Kensington, where the smart shops dress their windows and streets. It also names the displays on Oxford Street. From Monday 26 October 2026, though, the stretch between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street is closed to taxis, along with buses and cycles. So the cab cannot drive under those lights this season.

A cab can still cross the street from a side road, and your driver can drop you nearby for a short walk. Ask when you set off. Regent Street, Mayfair and the streets to the west are not in the closure. If the Oxford Street lights matter most, walk them: the silent-disco lights walk goes along the street. Stopping for photos

This is where a cab beats a bus. The bus rolls on; the cab pulls in. Travellers write about the stops again and again: time to step out, take the picture and get back in before your hands go numb. Bring a phone with space on it and a pair of gloves you can use a screen in.

It is dark enough for the lights from about half past four in late November and December. Book a start after that and every stop is lit.

• Traffic is part of it. December evenings are slow in the West End; stops take time.
• One stretch is closed. Oxford Street's central stretch is closed to taxis from 26 October.
• Tips are extra. Gratuities are not in the fare.
• Say what you want. The route is shaped with your driver; bring your list.
• Dress for the stops. You step out into the cold at each one.
